In a letter to the editor that was published by The Economist magazine, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce countered a previously published article with facts. With the majority of the world’s oil reserves located in countries with poor environmental standards and questionable human rights records, one could argue that Canada’s oil sands represent the most significant strategic asset available to North America, Asia and beyond.

In a pre-budget submission made to Alberta’s Minister of Finance, the Chamber recommended a maximum program spending increase of 3.4 to 4.3 per cent, a cap on non-renewable resource revenue spending, strengthening the Sustainability Fund, and setting firm budgets for emergency and disaster spending.
The provincial budget will be released Feb. 9. Stay tuned for our commentary.

The Calgary Chamber of Commerce, along with The City of Calgary and a number of local business advocacy organizations have joined forces for Phase Two of Mayor Nenshi's Cut Red Tape initiative. We are aiming to collect and implement solutions that will make it easier for citizens and businesses to interact with the City of Calgary.
Starting December 8, 2011 and running until February 15, 2012, we are asking all members of the Chamber, local entrepreneurs, and business representatives to submit their suggestions on how we can control red tape at a municipal level.
Your contributions and suggestions will ensure that Phase Two of the Cut Red Tape initiative can successfully find and deliver lasting solutions to Cut Red Tape in The City of Calgary.

Ben Brunnen, Chief Economist with the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, released an Economic Outlook that projects strong growth for Calgary but with many global risks. Brunnen's Economic Outlook was featured at a Risk Management Association economic panel event this morning.
