Your 2018 Board of Directors

Posted by: Alycia Lowdon on November 28, 2017

The Calgary Chamber Board are the volunteer leaders of Calgary’s business community. They give of their time and expertise to help member businesses grow, and to make the business environment even more competitive.

For 126 years this Board has helped lead Calgary’s business community through good times and bad, and ensure the voice of business is heard clearly on the key issues that affect our city, province and country. A job they will continue in 2018, as the businesses of Calgary lead the way out of tough economic times.

This is why I’m so pleased to be able to announce to you the 2018 Calgary Chamber Board today, following the results of a public vote of the Chamber membership.

2018 will be a year of positive change for the Calgary Chamber. We are welcoming 2 new board members from diverse backgrounds – entrepreneurial business and energy.

As voted by the Chamber membership, I am thrilled to welcome the following new board members:

  • Jenn Lofgren, Founder, Incito
  • Mike Shaw, Vice President, Calgary Region Gas Distribution, ATCO

I would also like to congratulate James Boettcher, Chief Idea Officer, Fiasco Gelato, for being re-elected for a second term as Board Director.

I sincerely thank all of the other candidates who let their names stand for this important role, and I know they will also continue to be active contributors to the Chamber.

The 2018 Board Chair is Phil Roberts, President of Vintri Technologies. Phil is an experienced executive and a proven team-oriented leader who has improved the business performance and grown market share of the companies he has worked for. He is an innovator, a community builder and an inspiring entrepreneur. He is the perfect leader for the Calgary business community at this time.

As you may be aware, I am moving on from the Calgary Chamber at the end of this year. The Chamber is in good hands, Phil will ensure stable leadership and continue to guide the Chamber through the recruiting process of hiring a new President and CEO.

Along with guiding the search process, Phil has also set a few priorities to accomplish during his time as Board Chair:

  • A smooth transition of leadership as the Chamber looks to hire a new President and CEO
  • Increase member engagement through programs, events, and policy advocacy
  • Continue to expand on the Chamber’s digital strategy to create the Chamber of the future
  • Building out the next 3-year strategic plan for the Calgary Chamber

Also new to our executive is Brent Cooper, Partner at McLeod Law LLP, stepping into the role of Vice Chair. An experienced leader in business litigation, and a strong advocate for the Chamber’s policy work, Brent will be a valued member to the Executive team in 2018.

I would also like to highlight the substantial contribution of David Allen, our 2017 Chair, in helping guide and lead the Chamber to remarkable success in a very challenging year for our business community. Some of David’s accomplishments include:

  • Helping create a deeply-digital chamber of the future, so you can get value from anywhere, at any time, without needing to physically be present at events
  • Ensuring that all levels of government have critical business issues on their agenda, straight from Chamber members
  • Executing a successful Municipal policy campaign, called ‘A Calgary that Works’, that brought business issues to the forefront of the election while having a significant impact on the conversation around the election

Our newly elected board members will start work in their new roles effective January 1, 2018.
